Why are my muscles always tight?

And the reasons why...

"I think it just needs a rub" (*triggered*)
⠀⠀
"My hamstrings are SOOOOO tight!"⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Yet you can put both hands on the floor with straight legs...? ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Now then, this isn't directed at any one person but more of a collection of phrase me and the rest of the Injury Mechanics team hear on a regular basis. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀
Pain isn't always accompanied by tissue damage. Rather a perception of a threat or risk of damage. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
But what is this feeling trying to warn us about? Movement?!
⠀⠀
⠀⠀
No. The most obvious and simplistic answers are derived from maintaining the same static and stagnant position for a long period of time (sitting at a desk for too long) and your body is screaming out for movement and a reduction in metabolic stress. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
But in some cases, it's slightly more complex. Stiffness is described as more representative of a protective perceptual inference which will reduce movement and contribute to injury or further injury. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
This means you are basically filling in the gaps. Expecting discomfort is due to damage therefore subconsciously protecting yourself and potentially making yourself "stiffer" than you actually are or need to be. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀
As always the answer is progressive.

Progressive overload for each individual's specific needs, progressive improvement in strength, mobility, awareness, physical and mental wellbeing and an increased application of motor control. ⠀⠀
